Stoke Newington, affectionately known as ‘Stokey’ by locals, is situated in the borough of Hackney, one of London’s coolest and most vibrant areas. Stoke Newington has become a buzzing hotspot, outshining even hipster Dalston. While there are no tube stations nearby, numerous bus routes provide easy access from central London. This lack of tube connectivity has kept Stoke Newington offthe radar for most tourists, preserving its unique charm and preventing over-gentrification, unlike many other Hackney neighborhoods.

Historically, Stoke Newington faced decline after the Second World War and was once associated with the infamous Kray twins, notorious gangsters of the 1960s. Today, however, it has transformed into a vibrant melting pot of cultures, including thriving Muslim, Turkish, and Orthodox Jewish communities. If you venture a bit north by bus, you’ll likely encounter ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews with distinctive furry hats and curled side locks, adding to the area’s rich cultural tapestry.

Eating Out

Eating Out

As with the rest of the city, Stoke Newington offers an abundance of diverse cuisine—forget the usual bangers and mash. Here, you’ll find a fusion of flavors from all corners of the globe. There are numerous eateries lining the streets of this London neighborhood, but a few favorites stand out.

The Haberdashery is a Hackney resident’s favorite for brunch, often with a queue pouring out onto the High Street on weekends. With eclectic and vintage decor, this eatery has a Danish feel when it comes to food. Enjoy English muffins and sourdough bread with scrumptious sides while listening to local gossip.

For a quieter option, La Duchesse is an underrated spot with a splendid brunch menu and the best individual cake slices and tarts on Church Street. Their coffee and tea are excellent, and the prices are more reasonable than other places.

After exploring Stoke Newington, you’ll work up an appetite. For something different, head to Testi for the best grilled kebabs, onions covered in pomegranate sauce, and a variety of hot and cold sides. Try their lamb’s testicles, a Turkish specialty!

For fast food, Stokey Bears offers the best gourmet burgers in the area, with a hipster vibe where the cool kids gather to plan their night out.

If you’re dreaming of Ottolenghi-style fusion food perfect for sharing, The Good Egg is a must-visit. And for fish and chips, skip the pub and go to Sutton and Sons. This family-run shop is becoming a small chain in East London due to its popularity. Spot the lively fishmonger and owner on the High Street during the day.

Do

Do

Stoke Newington offers plenty to keep you entertained. My favorite activity is simply wandering the streets and browsing the shops. Just be warned, you’re likely to end up with bags of goodies by the end of your day.

For food shopping, try to avoid Whole Foods (although their Gail’s bread corner is a regular addiction for residents) and browse both local and exotic groceries from Green Fruits and Vegetables, a wonderfully laid-out grocery store on Church Street.

If you’re renting an apartment in Stoke Newington and want to cook up some serious meat, head to The Cookery on the High Street for discount chicken, or for something posher, Meat N16 on Church Street for traditional and high-quality meat products. There’s also a Farmers’ Market on Saturdays.

Walk down Church Street (between Clissold Park and the junction with High Street) for quirky and tasteful homeware, handmade candles, cushions, covers, greeting cards, and flower pots. Don’t miss the second-hand furniture shop, Retrohub, where local residents find retro bargains to decorate their homes.
